Would you recommend an airstone?

It's going through the cycling stage with fish so the ammonia is high. I'm doing regular water changes and the fish seem ok but what worries me is the amount of oxygen they get. I lowered the water levels so the filter causes a disturbance but i would prefer having an airstone that would allow me to raise water levels and keep the noise of water falling at a minimum. Also i hear airstones don't really help a lot anyway..is that true?
