How can i use my desktops to store files i can access remotely.?

I'm getting my laptop tomorrow i want to store music and stuff on my desktop and use my laptop and access it through the internet in my house. so i can play it while in another room ETC. I'm downloading Ubuntu server i think i will need this but i need help on what to do after i install.
